4nm SoC with support for LPDDR5 3,200 memory and UFS 3.1 storage

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC for entry-level smartphones. This one is manufactured on a 4nm manufacturing process and brings the same core configuration as its predecessor but with some improvements, including LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage support.

Although Qualcomm did not specify the manufacturing foundry, it was keen to note that the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 was fabbed at 4nm, which should significantly improve its overall efficiency. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC still retains the same CPU core configuration, with two performance cores working at 2.2GHz and six efficiency cores, clocked at 2.0GHz. Unfortunately, Qualcomm did not give out any details about the Adreno GPU, other than it supports OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0, and Vulkan 1.1 APIs and has hardware-accelerated H.265 and VP9 decoder. The biggest update is the support for LPDDR5 3,200 memory and support for faster UFS 3.1 storage.

The SoC also supports up to FHD+ resolution at 120 Hz screens. Qualcomm equipped the new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 with the new dual 12-bit Spectra ISP with support for up to 108MP photo capture and 32MP 30 FPS Zero Shutter Lag (dual 16+16MP as well). The new SoC also got the fresh Snapdragon X61 5G modem with up to 2.5Gbps DL and 900Mbps UL. It supports WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology.

“Snapdragon – at its core – is driving innovation while meeting the demands of OEMs and the broader industry,” said Matthew Lopatka, director of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “With this generational advancement in the Snapdragon 4-series, consumers will have greater access to the most popular and relevant mobile features and capabilities. We optimized every aspect of the platform in order to maximize the experiences for users.”

Some OEMs are already preparing phones based on the new Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, including Redmi and vivo, and those are expected to be announced in the second half of 2023.
